Dedicated to a Safe and Welcoming Space for All
Vancouver Estonian Society Code of Ethics
The Vancouver Estonian Society (VES) is dedicated to providing a harassment-free, safe and welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, socioeconomic status, race, or religion. Our most important rule is to treat each other with kindness and respect at all times. We do not tolerate public or private harassment of participants in any form.
These guidelines apply to all Vancouver Estonian Society events, spaces such as Mäeotsa, subgroups, and include any online discussions, digital messaging, live online meetings and comment spaces. Harassment includes, but is not limited to:
- Verbal comments that reinforce social structures of domination (related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, age, socioeconomic status, race, or religion)
- Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following
- Harassing photography or recording
- Inappropriate or unwelcome physical contact
- Unwelcome sexual attention
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour
Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.
VES values democratic governance, civic courage and care, sustainability and prudence in using funds and resources, responsibility and accuracy, independence and avoiding conflicts of interest, honouring commitments and recognition of authorship of ideas, and tolerance. Integrity, equality, dignity, openness, solidarity, collaboration, diversity, reliability, mutual respect, and recognition are central values of the VES, which help us to contribute to the development of a safe, balanced, and caring society.
Our common interest lies in promoting cultural activities and providing resources to preserve and celebrate Estonian heritage. In leading by positive example, together we can kindly and respectfully work together in encouraging and ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for all to enjoy.
If you have experienced any inappropriate or abusive behaviour and are looking for support services, please find a list of resources and programs in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland HERE »
Note that we continue to look for ways to improve and provide further support for our community members. Please contact us at: info[at]vesbc.com if there is any information our volunteer committee can help with.
