The group communicates through the Facebook group Vancouveri Mudilased, and is currently looking for teachers. All ages are welcome to join—from babies to teens, but adults who want to play games and learn some basic language skills can also join in the fun!
GROUP HISTORY
The Vancouver Estonian Society’s (VES) Estonian Supplementary School, or Eesti Kool, has been active since the 1950’s. Currently the school convenes biannually, in the fall semester in preparation for the Christmas pageant (Jõulupuu) and in the spring semester in preparation for the Mother’s Day pageant (Emadepäev). The Christmas pageant is held each year on the second Sunday in December following the Lutheran church service, and is a much-loved community event.
Vancouveri Eesti Seltsi täienduskool on tegutsenud 1950 aastast alates. Hetkel kooli tegevus toimub sügisel laste jõulupeo eel ja kevadel emadepäeva aktuseks valmistamiseks. Laste jõulupuu toimub igal aastal teisel pühapäeval detsembris, peale luteri kiriku teenistust, tavaliselt kell 1 p.l. ja see armastatud üritus pakub rõõmu nii kõige pisematele kui ka pensioniealistele.
The schoolchildren perform songs they have practiced, and the event offers food, music, song/dance/piano performances, and communal singing for all present to bring on the Christmas spirit! Santa Claus makes an appearance, and all children are welcome to attend and take part. In the past, Estonian school has had a greater number of students and parental involvement, and has been able to provide formal language and history lessons.
Koolilapsed esitavad laule, või tantse, mõni laps ütleb salmi jõuluvanale, teine kannab ette pala klaveril või kitarril või teisiti näitab oma oskusi. Pakume suupisteid, muusikat, ühislaulu, seltsi ja head jõulumeeleolu! Ootame jõuluvana saabmist ja kõik lapsed on teretulnud, võtma osa nii palju kui ise soovivad.
In its current form, the school provides a social venue where children of Estonian heritage can meet and, through music and play, develop friendships with children of a common background. We hope to encourage the children’s interest in and understanding of their cultural heritage. We welcome new families to join in, as new ideas and energy are most welcome!
Aastaid tagasi oli arusaadavalt palju rohkem lapsi täienduskoolis. Praegusel ajal ei ole rõhk keeleõppel, vaid on kooli põhimõtte see, et eesti päritoluga lapsed saavad kokku, saavad laulda, tantsida, kunsti teha, ja sõprussidemeid luua. Soovime et lapsed tunneksid huvi oma esivanemate maa vastu ja õpivad paremini tundma oma kultuuri tausta. Oleme alati avatud uute perede liitumisesele ja uued ideed ja energia on teretulnud!
